Q&A
What are chip cards?
Chip-enabled credit and debit cards contain a microchip that stores encrypted data designed to identify the card and cardholder. They may also contain sophisticated security programs that require a personal identification number (PIN) to be entered every time the card is used.
Why are they being introduced?
In this day of increased credit and debit card fraud, chip technology is expected to increase the security of personal payment cards. It is also expected to improve the speed and efficiency of transactions.
When will merchants
have to upgrade?
Mastercard and VISA have committed to mass distribution of chip cards by 2010, Interac has plans to migrate automated banking machines and point-of-sale terminals to process chip card transactions starting in 2010. It is expected in the next few years all merchants will be required to upgrade to chip-enabled technology.
